‘Roseanne’ Star Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Issue & Unsettling Encounter They Overcame

“Roseanne” actress Sarah Chalke is opening up about an unexpected fan encounter that followed one of the most talked-about casting changes in sitcom history.

During a February 2026 appearance on the “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, hosted by “Modern Family” actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Chalke reflected on a fan experience she faced after stepping into the role of Becky Conner-Healy during the show’s sixth season in 1993.

A Fan Interaction Followed a Major Casting Change

Chalke looked back on her early days on the popular 90s television show with perspective and humor. She replaced Lecy Goranson, who briefly left the series to attend college. While the casting decision is now well-known television trivia, Chalke said the reaction at the time was intense.

She shared a story about when she attended a Freedom Tibet rally as a college student, according to Parade. A viewer recognized her and shouted at her.

“They like yelled at me and they were like, ‘I like the first Becky way better!’” Chalke said. “And I was like, ‘Okay. Yeah, she was fantastic. I agree. She was great.’”

The encounter did not end there. Chalke said the fan later returned to apologize.

“He came back and he was like, ‘Hey, I just want to apologize. I’ve always just like wanted to yell at an actor and you were here,’” she recalled. “‘And so, I’m sorry. And I didn’t mean it.’”

Chalke said she accepted the apology and was relieved by the clarification. Now, she looks back on it as a memorable moment from her early career.

Looking Back on Pressure, Age, and Purpose

According to the podcast episode description, Chalke spoke about “becoming famous straight out of high school on the no. 1 sitcom.” Chalke said she was only 16 years old when she was cast as Becky, a fact she believes helped her manage the role at the time.

“I think the only reason that I was able to actually even go and do the job was because I was so naive,” she explained. “I didn’t really get it in the same way that I would now, in terms of the pressure cooker that that situation was.”

Meanwhile, Goranson’s departure from “Roseanne” stemmed from a desire to pursue college and experience a sense of normalcy beyond acting, which is a decision she has discussed in past interviews.

Although Goranson later resumed the role she first made famous, Chalke continued to portray Becky in select episodes during the show’s eighth and ninth seasons. She later returned to the franchise in a different capacity following the 2018 revival, which ultimately evolved into “The Conners.”
