Jennie Garth faced plenty of tough decisions when she played Kelly Taylor in “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
However, instead of choosing between Dylan and Brandon, she’s choosing herself.
Jennie Garth Reveals Truth In Memoir
Getty“At that age, I didnโt really get it,” she joked to PEOPLE. However, after writing her memoir, something clicked.
“The phrase just came back to me and it started to really resonate,” she shared.
“Even though it took a while, Iโm finally at a place comfortable choosing myself.”
Jennie Garth wasn’t prepared for the heights the show would bring.
“It was like being in The Beatles,” she shared. “There was no preparation for it. It was scary and unknown for all of us, and it was like sink or swim, just survive and figure it out as you go. It was major on-the-job training.”
Jennie Garth Was Her Own Worst Critic
GettyDespite her popularity on the show, Jennie Garth kept a private life.
“I really did a good job, to the point where I walked around not making eye contact with people, not wanting anybody to know anything about my life,” she said. “That led me into a very isolated existence.”
“Iโm my own worst critic,” she says in her memoir, “I Choose Me: Chasing Joy, Finding Purpose, and Embracing Reinvention.”
“I spent a good amount of years being hurt, sad, just tormented by it, and it eked out into all aspects of my life,” she said of her divorce.
Garth admits she struggled after her divorce.
“I noticed my light really dimming. I wasnโt putting off good vibes.”
She continued, “I could see it in the mirror.”
“I could look at the negative impact that that kind of grief and anger was having on me. And there was a weird switch where one day I just said, ‘I donโt want to carry this anymore. Itโs impacting my relationships and how I feel about myself. Iโve got to let it go. Iโve got to forgive him.'”
“I really wanted to give Dave a baby because he was young and all of his friends were having kids and I just thought thatโs what he needed,” she said.
“It all comes down to people-pleasing… Once you really get to the core of what you want for your life? Thatโs when everything seems to get easier.”
