“American Idol” season 3 finalist Jennifer Hudson couldnโt hold back her emotions after receiving one of the most heartwarming gifts this holiday season. The Oscar-winning singer and “Dreamgirls” actress was moved to tears after her 16-year-old son, David Jr.โwhom she shares with exย David Otungaโsurprised her by recording his own cover of one of her songs.
David Jr. Showcases His Talent in a Special Way
“I didnโt want to sing with you because I had made you something,” David told his mom in a video posted on herย Instagram on December 26. “Iโm gonna just let the video play.”
In the following clip, Hudson burst into tears the moment she heard David’s voice in his rendition of “Find the Love,” taken from her 2024 holiday albumย “The Gift of Love.” Hudson’s family and friends were gathered behind her in the video, including her boyfriendย Common, who was also moved by her son’s gift, nodding along with a big grin on his face.
Hudson put her hand to her heart and wiped the tears from her eyes as she listened, looking like a proud mom. David joined her on the couch, and they wrapped their arms around each other in a touching family moment.
At the end of the video, Hudson said, “yโall done outdid yourselves now,” as she dabbed her eyes with tissues. “Wow. I donโt know what to tell you. Thank you,” she said, at a loss for words as David sat beside her, also emotional and fanning his eyes.
This moment touched Hudson’s friends and fans on Instagram as well.
“omg iโm crying ๐ข๐ฅนโค๏ธ” wrote fellow actress and singer Halle Bailey.
“Now I’m over here crying! And this is my favorite song off your Christmas album!! Baby boy better SANG!!!โค๏ธ” wrote Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown.

David Jr. and His Mom Have Sang Together Before
This wasnโt the first time David showcased just how talented he was. Last month, the mother-son pair recorded a duet ofย Daniel Caesarย andย H.E.R.โs 2017 single “Best Part.”
“Thatโs gonna be a meme or something,” David joked as his mom playfully sang the R&B ballad. “You know you canโt do too loud!”
“The best part of singing is singing with my son. He said mama letโs record one of my fav songs together,” wrote Hudson in the caption of her November 15 Instagram post.
