In a rare photo believed to be from the 1960s, Dolly Parton was seen for one of the last times ever without one of her signature platinum wigs that became her trademark. Instead of the voluminous locks for which she’s so well known, the rising star wore her her hair, which appears to be bleached blonde at the top and naturally dark at the ends, in two ponytails draped around her shoulders.
Along with cementing her place in music history as a country superstar, Dolly’s many side projects included mentoring hopeful singers on “American Idol” and the “The Voice.” She appeared on season 7 of “Idol,” and made special appearances on “The Voice” in 2015, 2016, and 2023.
She added a headband, long dangling earrings, and a chain necklace to accessorize her simple white top.
Dolly Parton Previously Declared, ‘I Do Have Hair!’ In an Interview
In a 2013 interview with “60 Minutes Australia, Dolly said, “I do have hair. But I usually just kinda wear it up in a little scrunchie or something, just with my casual clothes. But when I’m performing or out in public, I like to wear the wigs cause they’re handy.”
Dolly, who stood around 5 feet tall, also revealed she enjoys rocking her high heels almost all the time, even at home, laughing, “I’m so little I can’t even reach my cabinets unless I put my shoes on.” She continued, “Of course there are times when I’m not overdone, let’s put it that way. But I always try to put on a little makeup for my husband (Carl Dean), and just fix my hair a little bit. You know, fluff it with some hot rollers or put my hair up in a scrunchie. Cause I don’t wanna look too tacky for him. She added, “I tidy up a little bit, but I have my downtime.”
Dolly Parton’s Hair Evolution
As a child, Dolly usually wore her hair short and close-cropped. She’s seen above at age 13 on the cover of her first record, “Puppy Love.”
In high school, she shifted to the puffy bouffant styles that were popular in the 1960s.

In 2006, Dolly made her first appearance as Miley Stewart’s “Aunt Dolly” on “Hannah Montana” wearing a half-up-half-down style that was smooth and sleek but still had plenty of volume.
In the 2010s, Dolly often favored wavy, feathered styles. She’s seen below in 2015 with actress Alyvia Alyn Lind, who played a young version of the A-lister in the NBC television movie “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors.”
Glamorous forever, Dolly was seen in the above TikTok video taking a photo with a crew member on a photoshoot just a little over a year before she passed away. The admirer who posted it wrote, “What I was struck by more strongly than anything was her presence and kindness as evident here, in the last slide, by the fact that after a crazy long day on set, Dolly took photos with every single person working.”
