Hallmark just launched something bigger than a new show. “Hope Valley: 1874” premiered March 21 exclusively on Hallmark+. It marks the first time the network has built out a full universe around one of its series. For Hearties, this is a big deal. For casual viewers, it might not have fully registered yet.
What Is ‘Hope Valley: 1874’
“Hope Valley: 1874” takes viewers back to the Pioneer Era, long before the town becomes the Hope Valley seen in “When Calls the Heart.” The series follows the early settlers who forge that isolated stretch of frontier into a close-knit community, according to Hallmark Channel.
As Parade reported, Bethany Joy Lenz stars as Rebecca Clarke; a widow who travels from Chicago to the Western Canadian frontier with her 11-year-old daughter. When her wagon breaks down, rancher Tom Moore, played by Benjamin Ayres, steps in to help. Jill Hennessy rounds out the main cast as frontier woman Hattie Quinn.
The show streams exclusively on Hallmark+. It does not air on the linear Hallmark Channel, and new episodes drop every Thursday beginning March 26.
Why It Matters
Hallmark describes this as a universe expansion, not a spinoff or a holiday special. Head of Programming Michelle Vicary said in an interview with Parade that the show gives Hallmark “a wonderful opportunity to further explore the universe of When Calls the Heart and build a deeper world around this show for our devoted fans.”
According to Girls Gone Hallmark, that language signals something deliberate. Hallmark is building the Hope Valley world the way other networks build franchises. “Hope Valley: 1874” goes back decades before the main series, set long before the town even gets its name, to tell the origin story of the community Hearties have spent 13 seasons loving.
The Name Confusion Fans Are Having
Not everyone caught on right away. Longtime Hearties pointed out that in 1874, the settlement had not yet become Hope Valley at all. Fans took to social media to question whether the title aligns with the “When Calls the Heart” timeline. As Girls Gone Hallmark reported, Benjamin Ayres addressed it directly on Instagram. A fan noted that Hope Valley did not get its name until 1910. Ayres replied that the show takes place even before Coal Valley had its name.
Cast members from both shows gathered in Hollywood for a joint celebration ahead of the Season 13 finale and the “Hope Valley: 1874” premiere. According to Splash Magazines, the new cast said they hope to live up to the foundation built by the “When Calls the Heart” cast.
The show carries a grittier, more rugged tone than “When Calls the Heart.” Frontier life looks hard and emotionally raw in ways that surprised even longtime Hallmark viewers at the premiere event.
For fans who only watch Hallmark Channel and have not yet subscribed to Hallmark+, it might feel like just another addition. In reality, it marks a major expansion of the Hope Valley story.
