“CBS Morning” host Gayle King will reportedly be pivoting from her current role into a “special projects” position amid a major shakeup at the network.
Gayle King Reportedly Moving Into New Role at CBS
King, who has been with CBS since November 2011, will be moving into a new, “reduced” role at the network, according to multiple reports.
“She’s basically moving into a ‘special projects’ role,” Rob Shuter explained in his Tuesday, January 20, Naughty But Nice Substack, adding that CBS “loves” King. “She can still headline big interviews, still be a face for the network, but her role will be drastically reduced.”
Variety reported that King is weighing her options moving forward amid the CBS shakeup.
“King is said to be considering various options, including a special correspondent role that would have her making appearances on CBS News properties but not being a regular host, or another that might keep her on the air for another year but at a lower salary, giving her 12 full months to bid farewell to viewers,” the outlet claimed.
That lower salary, according to New York Post, will likely see King taking a 50 percent pay cut from her $10 million-plus salary.
Gayle King Previously Discussed the CBS Changes
During a December appearance on Sherri Shepherd’s talk show, “Sherri,” King opened up about rumors of her exit from CBS.
“I saw those rumors,” she said. “What I say is this, ‘I’m not going to negotiate in the press.’ But you know, I hear one thing in the building and one side outside the building. I’ll be reading an article and go, ‘That’s not true. That’s not true. That’s not true. That’s not true.'”
She continued, “So, I’ve decided I’m going to stay out of the drama. And there is some drama. I’m going to stay out of that. I’m just going to continue to do my job. And continue to do my job. And you do it so well. And stay out of it.”
“But I like the job. I’m told they like me,” King added.
King’s former cohost Tony Dokoupil was recently transitioned into an anchor for the CBS Evening News after nearly seven years on the morning show.
“Listen, Tony’s promotion is certainly going to mean changes at ‘CBS Mornings’. There’s no question about it,” King explained to Shepherd. “We shall see.”
According to New York Post, King’s current contract, which she renews annually, is set to expire in May.
