Actor Bruce Campbell Bravely Shares Doctors Have Given Him 5 Years to Live

During his five-decade career, actor Bruce Campbell has tackled a wide range of roles, from his iconic horror franchise “Evil Dead” to Disney blockbusters including “Cars” and “Monsters, Inc.” to charming rom-coms like Hallmark Channel’s “My Southern Family Christmas” and “One December Night.”

But the one role he wishes he didn’t have to step into is that of cancer patient. Campbell announced in the spring of 2026 that he’d been diagnosed with a “treatable but not curable” cancer, forcing him to step back from some of his commitments to undergo treatment. On September 3, he revealed his doctors have given him five years to live, “give or take.”

Bruce Campbell Says He Feels ‘Perfect’ Right Now

Campbell, 68, shared his prognosis while appearing on “The Adam Carolla Show,” noting that right now he feels “perfect” but he knows that will not always be the case.

“The cancer, it creeps me out because of the ancillary stuff that it does,” he told podcast host Adam Carolla. “It’s not just, you don’t die for cancer. You die from what cancer does to you.”

Campbell said he didn’t “want to get into” the type of cancer he’s dealing with, but that “the current thing is a five-year deal.”

The actor is holding out hope that research may uncover treatment that could extend his prognosis, telling Carolla, “Five years from now what are they going to have? (Maybe) they’re going to have a little thing they can put in thing and it’ll do a thing.”

“I’ve decided though, pretty specifically, to live with it, not die from it,” he continued. “The cancer rabbit hole is enormous. You can go into focus groups of 10,000 guys who have exactly what you have. I won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole.”

Bruce Campbell is Focused on Promoting His Passion Project, ‘Ernie & Emma’

Campbell announced his cancer diagnosis in March via a lengthy social media statement, telling his fans, “These days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that – I’m having one of those. It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable,’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock – it was to me too.”

At the time, the actor told fans, “Professionally, a few things will have to change – appearances and cons and work in general need to take back seat to treatment.”

“My plan is to get as well as I possibly can over the summer,” he continued, “so that I can tour with my new movie ‘Ernie & Emma’ this fall.”

Now that it’s fall, Campbell confirmed to Carolla that promoting his new movie is his priority. He wrote, directed, produced and stars in the independent dramedy. “Ernie & Emma” is about a small-town pear salesman, Ernie, who’s grieving the loss of his wife, Emma.

“After twenty-five years as an executive secretary, Emma leaves behind a detailed list of instructions regarding her ashes,” per the synopsis, “which leads Ernie on a journey of challenging and reflective escapades across Pear Valley, Oregon. As Ernie navigates the road trip of their lives, Emma helps him confront his grief and encourages him to move forward, transforming his life in the process.”
