Meghan Markle’s Father Begins Next Phase of Recovery After Life-Saving Surgery That Required Amputation

Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, had life-saving surgery in December after he was rushed to the hospital after becoming ill at home. The surgery lasted three hours where doctors amputated his limb below the knee.

And now, he is set to begin the next level in his recovery, with Thomas Markle Jr revealing in a livestream that his father is in physical therapy and will “soon be trying out prosthetic attachments,” according to Daily Mail.

‘We’re going to have to get him fitted for a prosthetic here pretty soon and get that man walking again. That’s the goal. That’s the priority,’ Markle Jr said, per the outlet.

Meghan Markle Reached Out To Her Estranged Father Following His Surgery

Meghan and her father have been estranged since 2018, but she did reach out to him after his medical emergency, A spokesperson for Meghan confirmed to PEOPLE in December.

“I can confirm she has reached out to her father,” they said.

According to the outlet, the spokesperson “did not provide further details,” but they were told by a source that “the outreach from Meghan is very recent, following the reports of her father’s medical emergency.”

When speaking with the Daily Mail on December 2, Thomas’s son told the outlet that his father was rushed to the hospital after he fell ill at home. He then underwent a three-hour surgery and was placed in intensive care.

“I took dad to a hospital close to our home, and they did various scans, and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger,” Thomas Jr told the outlet. “They raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the centre of the city. My dad has undergone emergency surgery. I would ask everyone around the world to keep him in their thoughts.”

This was not the first medical emergency for Thomas, who had “been through two heart attacks, a stroke and an earthquake,” according to his daughter, Samantha. Specifically, the earthquake occured in October 2025 when Thomas was “trapped” on the 19th floor of an apartment building in the Philippines after a 6.9-magnitude Earthquake.

“My father is stuck on the 19th floor of a building in the Philippines after a massive earthquake and he can’t walk and he is trapped,” Samantha posted on X (per The New York Post).

“As of today he is OK, and making plans to get out of that building. They seem to be safe for now, and hopefully there will be no serious aftershocks. Provisions are being made so that he won’t be trapped in a similar situation again. God bless and stay safe everyone!”
