Niall Horan Explains Why His ‘The Voice’ Artist Missed Rehearsal

“The Voice” Season 28 hit a minor speed bump when Team Niall artist Dustin Dale Gaspard was forced to skip Knockout round rehearsals due to feeling under the weather. The Louisiana native’s absence meant missing the opportunity to work directly with mega mentor Joe Walsh, but his coach, Niall Horan, ensured he stayed connected while prioritizing his health and recovery.

Gaspard’s choice of The Black Crowes’ “She Talks To Angels” for his Knockout song showcased his deep connection to music with emotional depth and blues influences. The Cow Island resident’s ability to find personal meaning in diverse musical selections has become a hallmark of his Voice journey since his memorable Blind Audition performance.

Health First, Competition Second

When rehearsal time arrived, Horan addressed Gaspard’s absence with understanding and flexibility. “Dustin wasn’t feeling very well and is not gonna make it to the rehearsal,” the coach explained during a FaceTime call with his artist, according to NBC.com. The virtual connection allowed them to maintain their working relationship despite the physical separation.

Gaspard expressed both gratitude for his recovery and regret about missing the collaborative opportunity. “I feel a lot better. Sorry I couldn’t make it, man. I really wanted to be a part of everything and to hang out and talk about the song,” he shared during their video conversation.

His song choice carried personal significance that he was eager to discuss with his mentor. “There’s a lot of lyrical depth that I really feel connected to, and also blues-y undertones,” Gaspard explained about selecting “She Talks To Angels,” demonstrating his thoughtful approach to musical interpretation.

Horan’s response prioritized long-term success over immediate concerns. “You have to get better before we worry about any of that. We still have time to rehearse,” he assured his artist.

The situation was eventually resolved, with Gaspard returning in time for stage rehearsals where he could showcase his multi-instrumental talents with both guitar and harmonica. His recovery allowed him to deliver a full-strength performance by the time cameras rolled for the actual Knockout round.

Cultural Ambassador Through Music

Gaspard’s journey on “The Voice” extends beyond individual competition success to represent broader cultural significance for the Cajun community. According to Vermilion Today, his appearance on the show has created meaningful connections with viewers who feel represented through his performances.

The impact of his cultural representation became clear through fan interactions in his home state. “The biggest way that my life has changed has been when people approach me; they feel a genuine connection,” Gaspard shared with the outlet. “They talk about the audition, and they tell me that when they heard I was singing in Cajun French, they said that it changed some things.”

His unique “swamp pup” style, described by NBC.com as “Cajun-inflected rhythm-and-blues New Orleans type of bluegrass,” brought unprecedented musical diversity to the “Voice” stage. As the first contestant to perform in Cajun French, he opened new territory for the competition series.

During his life-changing Blind Audition experience, Gaspard recalled the emotional moment of switching to French. “When I sang in French, I started to tear up, and then I saw a big light, and all the emotions that I was dissociating myself from to be a part of this extremely nerve-wracking moment in my life, they all just came flooded back in,” he shared on the “Louisiane” podcast.

NPR.com notes that Gaspard has been a fixture of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast music scene for over a decade, with his 2022 debut album building his music career before his national television breakthrough.

  1. You made a mistake you should’ve picked Dustin if he had just made it to where people vote he would have won in a landslide .

    • ๐Ÿ’ฏ Is there anyway he can be brought back on the show? No saves? No second chances? I think had he not missed the rehearsal Neil and Joe Walsh could have helped him fine tune his choice of song. Bring him back! Bring him back! He outsang the young lady hands down.
